Lower Uric Acid and a New Gout Drug. Febuxostat Wins

Has taken a very long time for a major new gout drug to be developed and approved. Probably the best gout news in over 40 years, is that Febuxostat, which has been given the trade/brand name of Adenuric, has been approved by the European Medicines Agency for marketing in European Union (EU) countries.

BENEFITS In large trials Febuxostat (Adenuric) has outperformed Allopurinol, the most common gout medication for long term treatment. Like Allopurinol, it works to lower uric acid production by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, an enzyme required to produce uric acid. In two major studies it reduced uric acid (UA) in more gout sufferers, and more patients reached the target 0 mg/dL level more quickly, than did those on Allopurinol. Very Happy.

  • Your uric acid levels will have to be high.
  • If you have gout but normal or slightly raised uric acid levels as some do, it is unlikely to be prescribed. Rolling Eyes

NB. The contents of this article contain medical information not medical advice. Please always discuss remedies with your doctor or other health care professional, before implementing any treatment. Evil or Very Mad

Will also only be used in gout patients who have chronic hyperuricemia (high UA levels) and gout. So if you're a gout sufferer who lives in a European country that's a member of the EU, you can ask your doctor's opinion about whether Febuxostat is suitable for you.

  • You have severe kidney or liver problems Febuxostat is not recommended since it has not been tested in these patient groups.
  • It is not recommended for people with heart disease or children.
  • Tophi If you have tophi, it's heartening to know that Febuxostat has been shown to have success against tophi.
  • Measured tophi areas reduced in many patients with tophi.
  • The presence of tophi will be an additional factor in favour of a decision to prescribe Febuxostat (Adenuric).

And It May Cause Side Effects of Course

See the bottom of this article. Febuxostat (Adenuric) is not unfortunately a treatment for gout pain. It won't be used instead of NSAIDS like Indomethacin, Colchicine, and corticosteroids. It is of no use thinking that you know everything, when in reality, you don't know anything! It is only because we knew so much about Uric Acid that we got down to writing about it!

You will not need to be on a low purine diet, and more good news is that it can be prescribed for the elderly. Kidney and liver disease In trials it has performed quite well with patients who have mild kidney disease. 44% of patients achieved the target at an 80 mg dosage, more at higher dosages. Better results than Allopurinol. If you have mild kidney disease (renal impairment) or mild liver problems (hepatic impairment) your doctor will judge whether Adenuric/Febuxostat can be taken safely.

Generally, Febuxostat Has Been More Effective When UA Levels are Below

0 mg/dL (595 mmol/mol). However, even if they have been above this level, it has reduced UA levels down to the target in about 40% of study patients at an 80 mg dosage, and by more at higher dosages. After reading what was written here, don't you get the impression that you had actually heard about these points sometime back. Think back and think deeply about Colchicine Very Happy.

IT'S NOT PERFECT In trials its success rate in reducing UA levels down to the important 0 mg/dL (357 mmol/mol) level was not 100%. About 35% of trial patients did not achieve the target. This may have been partly because so many gout sufferers are not UA over-producers, the problem Febuxostat addresses, but under-excretors of uric acid.

  • WHO WILL BE PRESCRIBED IT? The recommended dose is one 80 mg daily tablet.
  • If after two weeks there is no reduction in UA levels, your doctor may increase the dose to 120 mg daily.
  • Patients will need another serum UA test after two weeks treatment to find out how well it's doing.
  • In trials it has usually worked quickly, within a couple of weeks. Shocked

This Approval Applies Only to EU Countries

Febuxostat has not yet been approved in the United States. If you are reading this from a non-EU country, or the US, you can check with your doctor to find out whether, or when, Febuxostat will be approved in your country.

  • At 120 mg it has reduced UA levels to the target of 6.0 mg/dL in over 60% of study patients.
  • At 80 mg the numbers were around 51%.
  • Allopurinol at a 300 mg dosage in most participants achieved this is 22% of study patients.
  • Hence the excited buzz in rheumatology circles since these kinds of results became apparent in its trials.
  • At or below 6.0 mg/dL gout is more likely to be cured or managed better.
  • Uric Acid Levels Gout came into being some time back.
  • However, would you believe that there are some people who still don't know what a Uric Acid Levels Gout is?

Approval in one country does not mean approval in another, but the fact that the European Medicines Agency has approved it will carry weight when the medical authorities in other countries consider its approval. Smile

Noted possible side effects dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhoea, rashes, headaches, hypertension and liver function abnormalities - considered mild ones. In trials none of these side effects were reported in more than 3.5% of trial patients. The most common were liver function abnormalities.

Only a Few Vitamins Have Been Really Researched as Contributors to a Natural Gout Remedy

One is vitamin C which a few studies have found lowers uric acid levels somewhat. I have written about vitamin C for gout in earlier articles. Make sure you buy a Vitamin C preparation that contains added flavonoids, the more the better, to make it work more effectively. And buy a time (sustained) release Vitamin C product, because Vitamin C is excreted quickly. Evil or Very Mad

  • Folic acid has been found in at least one study to be helpful because it inhibited xanthine oxidase, but in others to have no effect.
  • It was part of the late Dr.
  • Atkins's (the Atkins diet) formula for curing gout naturally but in large amounts.
  • It should certainly only be taken under supervision by a qualified and experienced practitioner.

Other vitamins which have been reported from various sources to help in natural gout treatment are quercetin, folic acid, potassium citrate calcium, and fish oils. Smile

Potassium citrate is reported to be helpful in diet gout treatment, and has been the subject of gout studies. It aids excretion of uric acid, by raising the pH of urine. (Higher body pH levels make uric acid more soluble and thus better excreted). Potassium citrate can also head off the danger of kidney stones, of the uric acid variety, forming. One estimate is that there is a 20% chance that kidney stones will form in gout patients who also have acidic urine.

  • Quercetin may inhibit xanthine oxidase, the enzyme required to convert purines into uric acid.
  • This is the method used by the leading long term gout pharmaceutical, allopurinol.
  • Quercetin has done this in test tube studies.

Fish Oils are Also Good for Gout Because They Promote a Healthier Body

Their omega -3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are a dietary deficiency for many people, especially those who don't eat fish. Omega -3 fatty acids are required to bring about a better balance of omega -3 and omega -6 oils in the body. Most people, it is thought, do get sufficient omega -6 fatty acids, especially if they fry with oils such as corn, soy, sunflower, safflower or sesame. Or, if they use these oils as salad oils. But people don't get enough of the omega -3's. This better balance promotes better health. Gout sufferers need to be as healthy as possible. Note: gout sufferers should not eat fish high in purines such as mackerel, anchovies, and sardines. Idea

Vitamins Work in Other Ways to Help in Natural Gout Treatment

Those that work as antioxidants perform the helpful function of squelching free radicals. Why is this helpful? Because during gout attacks, free radical levels rise. Some leading antioxidant vitamins are vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene and selenium. Thinking of what to do upon reading this article on Www Gout? Well you can very well use the information constructively by imparting it to others. Embarassed

  • Ensure the fish oil supplement you buy has been manufactured with a molecular distillation process.
  • It takes out mercury, PCBs and dioxins.
  • Since cherries have been researched as blocking inflammation, they should be considered.
  • Cherries have also been found in studies to lower uric acid levels.
  • When they are not in season their dietary supplement extracts, juice and in dried form can be taken.
  • Cherries enjoy testimonials from gout sufferers both for curing gout naturally and halting the pain of attacks, but they won't do this for everyone.
  • Celery, in two studies, also reduced pain and inflammation, so you can consider celery seed extract as part of natural gout treatment. Idea

Given that gout attacks are inflammatory, as shown by the painful inflammation of the affected joints, any substance which acts as an anti-inflammatory may make agnes scott college painful and inflamed. Fish oils have well researched anti-inflammatory properties.

Arthritis Describes a Wide Range of Conditions (Over 100)

These can range from relatively mild forms e.g. tendonitis through to various crippling forms of systemic arthritis such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. There are also some forms of arthritis for example Gout which most people don't associate with arthritis at all.

The severity of these symptoms can be related to the patient's daily activity, anxiety and depression. Primary Osteoarthritis is mostly related to ageing. As we get older, the water content of cartilage increases and the protein makeup of it degenerates. Repetitive use of the joints over the years will irritate and inflame the cartilage. Eventually the cartilage starts to flake away causing crevasses. In some advanced cases, the cartilage has disappeared. The loss of the cartilage means that the bones which the cartilage is protecting can bump and grind against each other leading to pain and joint immobility. Inflammation of the cartilage can lead to bony outgrowths (spurs) appearing around the joints.

  • As with taking any medicine, you should always read the instructions supplied with them and follow any advice given by your doctor.
  • You should always seek professional medical attention and not simply rely on your own research before embarking upon a course of treatment.
  • Analgesics This is often the first medication prescribed to relieve the symptoms of Osteoarthritis.
  • It is a pain reliever and does nothing to reduce the level of inflammation so can usually be safely taken alongside other medication.
  • However, as with all medication, there are limits on how much a person can safely taken within a time period.
  • Osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms of Arthritis affecting around 1 in 10 people to some degree.
  • It affects both men and women equally.
  • Osteoarthritis is caused by bits of cartilage in the joint which have broken free.
  • This can cause pain and swelling in the joint.
  • This pain and swelling is Osteoarthritis.

Also, depending upon what type of Osteoarthritis you are suffering from, it is possible certain forms of exercise may relieve some of the symptoms and enable the sufferer to continue to live as normal a live as possible.

The Osteoarthritis has been present for a significant period of time, the muscles may become weaker through insufficient use as the patient subconsciously avoids using that joint. Also, the joint may appear swollen caused by bony growths called osteophytes or extra synovial fluid. Surprised.

  • Another symptom of Osteoarthritis is a creaking or grinding noise which occurs when the joint is moved.
  • Also, moving the joint through a full range of movement may not be possible.

Corticosteroids This medicine is injected directly into the affected joint. When Osteoarthritis has developed so far that the patient struggles to get around, then this medicine is a viable option. Cortisone is a steroid which reduces inflammation and swelling. This medicine provides almost instant relief although it can only be taken rarely as it takes away minerals from the existing cartilage causing further damage.

Codeine Preparations

Codeine is a narcotic which reduces the patient's sensitivity to pain. They can usually be taken in conjunction with Analgesics. In low doses, it can be taken without prescription. A side effect of taking Codeine is that it may cause Constipation. Laughing

As the Osteoarthritis develops, bits of the cartilage in the joint break off and float around inside the joint. This disturbs other soft tissues within the joint causing pain and swelling. Over time, as the condition develops, the cartilage becomes rougher and thinner causing the elon university to become thicker. Idea

  • Osteoarthritis occurs in the joints, however, it is predominantly found in hands and load bearing joints such as hips, knees.
  • It is described as a non-inflammatory type of arthritis which means that there is no swelling in the joint affected by Osteoarthritis.
  • This has been subsequently proven not to be the case.
  • In the early stages of Osteoarthritis, it is true that there is no swelling in the joint, however, in the later stages, there can be swelling.
  • While there is no cure at present for Osteoarthritis, there are a number of ways of managing this condition to minimise the symptoms.
  • There are different types of medicines which may be used depending upon the type of Osteoarthritis the patient is suffering from. Laughing

Significant number of people also think that arthritis is just a condition which old people suffer, and indeed, it is true that a significant number of the sufferers of arthritis are old, but there is an awful lot of younger people who suffer from one form or another of Arthritis.

Creams and Gels

These may provide some temporary pain relief, however, the pain relief will be localised to the area that the cream is applied. A lot of imagination is required in writing. People may think that writing on Gout is very easy; on the contrary, knowledge and imagination has to be merged to create an interesting composition. Very Happy.

Secondary Osteoarthritis is Caused by Other Conditions Which Lead to Osteoarthritis

These can be things such as obesity where the joints are placed under more stress due to the excessive weight of the patient, repeated trauma or surgery to joints, abnormal joints at birth, gout and related symptoms.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)

This type of medicine helps to reduce the inflammation if taken at a high dosage. If taking a low dosage, then they will just relieve the pain. However, they do not stop further damage to the joint. NSAID's don't start working and may require regular doses over a few weeks before they noticeable improvement takes place. There are some common side effects including stomach upset, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. This article has been written with the intention of showing some illumination to the meaning of Gout Diabetes. This is so that those who don't know much about Gout Diabetes can learn more about it.
